i need to build a gaming and web surfing computer system as part of an assignment. Any ideas on apps&hardware?

My text book asks for the applications and hardware I would need to build this system from scratch. I'm taking a computer repair class and this is my first venture into computers so a little help from you computer wizards would be greatly appreciated...Thanks

I think the answers before me are great. I think the idea on theory is best. I would also include a statement about needing a more in depth profile of the user. For a hardcore gamer, they will need a pretty powerful graphics card to handle the processes.
